The vitreoretina service at AlShifa
is a center of excellence in the country with
a very experienced faculty. About sixty patients
are examined everyday and approximately 600 major
retinal surgical

procedures are performed every year. It provides
diagnosis and treatment of various diseases of
retina, vitreous and choroid. Commonly encountered
conditions include retinal detachment, diabetic
retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration,
retinal problems related to myopia, retinal vascular
occlusion, ocular trauma, ocular infections, retinitis
pigmentosa and other heredofamilial retinal conditions.
The center provides management for simple and
complex retinal detachments including proliferative
vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tears, advanced
proliferative diabetic retinopathy, tractional
retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane,
intraocular foreign bodies etc. The surgical armamentarium
includes latest vitrectomy machines, microsurgical
wide-field viewing system, intraoperative laser,
the use of various intraocular temponade agents
including long-acting gases, silicone oil and
heavy liquids.

Retinal vascular diseases like diabetic retinopathy,
retinal vein occlusions and retinal vasculitis
are managed by laser and intravitreal injections
of anti VEGF drugs. This also includes management
of age related macular degeneration.
The diagnostic facilities include state of the
art Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), digital
retinal imaging and fluorescein angiography for
excellent accuracy and repeatability. Procedures
like ultrasound and electrophysiological tests
like ERG, multifocal ERG, EOG and VEP are routinely
